August 17, 2021 –Washington, DC. In what looks to be a first for the FDA, an EBay seller of dietary supplements has announced a voluntary nationwide recall of its Hydro Pineapple Burn. Normally we see the FDA work with drug or dietary supplement manufactures in doing recalls, but to see an individual that sells products online do a recall is rare.
John Nguyen sells something he calls Hydro Pineapple Burn, and describes the product as a dietary supplement for weight loss. Hydro Pineapple Burn was widely available on eBay nationwide in the USA (from 05/29/2021 to 07/27/2021). It was also being sold online via Amazon and other online retailers.
All lots of this product are being recalled. Hydro Pineapple Burn is packaged in a box containing ten 20 gram sachets. Since John Nguyen is not the manufacturer, the normal process of recalling products is different than most. He is simply notifying its customer base via this FDA press release (link below) and via email. The FDA lab analysis has shown that it contains an undeclared sibutramine. Sibutramine used to be an approved drug used for weight loss but was later taken off the market for safety reasons. The FDA’s Risk Statement is as follows:
Risk Statement: product containing sibutramine pose a health risk to consumers because sibutramine is known to substantially increase blood pressure and/or pulse rate in some patients and may present a significant risk for patients with history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias or stroke.
Back on August 3, 2021, the FDA issued a press release warning consumers to avoid certain products found at these online retailers due to hidden and potentially dangerous drug ingredients. The FDA went as far as ordering 26 different products from Amazon and found 80% purchased on eBay contained undeclared active pharmaceutical ingredients.
Donald D. Ashley, J.D., director of the Office of Compliance in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research made these statements to the public: “Protecting the health and safety of Americans is the FDA’s highest priority, and we will remain vigilant and communicate about products and companies that place U.S. consumers at risk,”
“While the FDA has engaged in discussions with online marketplaces like Amazon and eBay regarding these issues in the past, we believe they can do more to protect consumers from these fraudulent and potentially dangerous products. We continue to urge stores, websites and online marketplaces, like Amazon and eBay, to take appropriate steps to protect the American public by not selling or facilitating the sale of illegal FDA-regulated products.”
We and the FDA encourage people to report any side effects, quality problems or any health issues you may have had with any consumer drug or medical device product, by using the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting (https://www.fda.gov/safety/medwatch-fda-safety-information-and-adverse-event-reporting-program/reporting-serious-problems-fda) program either online, by regular mail or by fax.
